Emotional Philosophy

Emotional Philosophy (a.k.a. "EP" because we're lazy) was recorded in Phoenix (but at a different location than Still Life With Llamas [SLWL]), released on the Class III Records label, and is the result of several years of stop-and-start work. Like SLWL, it is composed of both old and new material (some of the older stuff going back to the late 1980's). This album is yet another example of our ground-breaking innovation of having a title track. We continue to be amazed at the genius of this move, so much so that we are now further experimenting with songs that actually mention their titles in the lyrics, and not just one mention, but in the chorus, even. Will the innovation never stop?

EP is our most diverse album, yet, both in subject matter and style. From the flat-out-mushy-assed love song Lullaby, to the rockin' Contradictory Girl, to the plaintive Darkness at Noon (yes, we have read the book - no connection - just liked the title), to the angry What Do I Get, we spread our wings even farther than usual.

Many thanks go to Jennifer Gates, who's backing vocal added a lot of character and depth to Darkness at Noon.

Many thanks also to Daniel's son Alex, whose Photoshopped watercolor forms the centerpiece of the album cover (if you had only told us when we started as kids that one day our own kids would be contributing cover art...).
Still Life With Llamas

Recorded in Phoenix, Arizona and released on the Class III Records label, Still Life with Llamas (affectionately known as SLWL) was our favorite album (until Emotional Philosophy). It is our usual (usual as of the last few albums anyway) mix of songs newly written for the album and songs from our past that never received the treatment they deserved. It's all over the place in terms of genre, from the ethereal title track, to the campy My Blue Car, to the 'Lou Reed-ish' A Girl Like That. It's a fun ride and we think you'll enjoy it.

This album marks our first with an actual title track - we were very excited at the time to have come up with the amazing idea of actually naming an album after one of the songs (such an amazing idea, we did it again with Emotional Philosophy). We were sure this innovation would catch on like wildfire in the music industry, and it clearly has. Now maybe if we had filed that patent application (come on, that's as valid as Amazon's "One-Click" patent).

Note on the booklet art: the band did all the artwork and design for the booklet, CD label, jewel-case back, etc. Daniel gets special credit for the cover, but we must have spent 3 hours in that damn art supply store trying to figure out what we needed to buy to make it. Those places just sap the strength out of you, just by breathing the air - we hope you like the cover because we almost died making it.
Petroglyph

Petroglyph was recorded in Albuquerque, New Mexico and released on the Class III Records label (why do I keep saying that - everything we've done has been released by Class III). It's an eclectic collection of songs with very different sounds, from the haunting instrumental Prince of Space (and you would not believe how many web hits our site gets just because of people doing internet searches for Prince - we ought to do one song title per album with the name of a famous artist in it, just to increase our web visibility), to the fast-paced, pop-music-style Consolation Prize, to the bittersweet La Femme Belle.

This album marked our first effort at distribution beyond family, friends, and neighbors, and we would like to thank everyone who has bought a copy so far. (No one has returned it and asked for their money back, so that's a good sign, but perhaps they're just being polite.) If you liked Petroglyph, we think you'll like SLWL better, and EP even better, so try some tunes from those as well. In fact, if you didn't like Petroglyph, please try some tunes from EP instead - the songs on Petroplyph are as good as any we've done, but the production quality on EP is much better - we have better equipment and we've learned to use the technbology better.

As usual, the booklet and art work were put together by the band. The pictures were taken either in Petroglyph National Park in Albuquerque, or in the studio. Amusing vignette: we were going to call the album something else until we saw the pictures from Petroglyph National Park and said, "Umm....let's call it Petroglyph."
